Jamille Matt came from the bench and believed to earn a victory over Port Vale to Newport.
Matt purpose means the Exiles are currently 17 games unbeaten in League Two and two points behind leaders Exeter.
Vale may count themselves fortunate to have 11 guys later James Gibbons slipped with a full-blooded challenge into Robbie Willmott going in at half-time and survived some heavy first-half pressure.
Matt and Corey Whitely were introduced in the chair and united to carve the breakthrough .
Whitely jumped down the perfect wing, leaving Adam Crookes in his wake, before crossing the ball to score his first of the season after 77 minutes.
Padraig Amond saw his penalty saved by Scott Brown, diving to his left although Vale captain Leon Legge then draged down into the box the Exiles striker.
Newport saw out the game although legge hit the bar with a header in additional time.
